Marissa, An Update (IV)

Things that happened over the last year that you might not know if I haven’t talked to you recently:

We moved! Like a block. We graduated from our one-bedroom apartment where you couldn’t stand in the kitchen and open the fridge door at the same time to a two bedroom apartment where several people can stand in the kitchen at once. The walls are also white and there’s a lot of light, and every day Austin and I look at each other at some point or another and say, “I love our apartment.”

Marissa: An Update (III)

Things that happened over the last year that you might not know if I haven’t talked to you recently:

Austin graduated from law school, graduated from business school, passed the bar, and became an attorney at law at a law firm in downtown Boston, and we are Very Proud. (I am Very Proud. Austin is weirded out by having an assistant.)
I got a job at Harvard Divinity School as a faculty coordinator, which means I run schedules and process financials, do some occasional editing and research. It’s not glamorous or important, and I like that. I’ve liked having a job that I don’t care about very much, because it means that it doesn’t figure into my identity very much, which feels both healthy and unlike anything I’ve ever done before.

Marissa: An Update

Things that happened over the last year that you might not know if we haven’t talked recently:

I graduated from divinity school! It was online, which was sad. But Yo-yo Ma played, which was lovely, and I can report that he has a very normal bookcase in his house.
Austin and I spent more time with our families than we have in our adult lives. Which was not the way we’d planned to start our marriage, but wasn’t a bad way to start: we know each other’s families much more now. Austin’s had time to convert my parents to boardgames, and I’ve had time to get his parents addicted to The Great British Baking Show.
I read 53 books, most of which were escapist. Persuasion is as good as you remember.

Marissa: A Recap

Things that might have happened since the last time I talked to you, depending on when the last time I talked to you was:

I went to graduate school at Harvard Divinity School (HDS) to study stories of holy women. Consequentially, I moved to Boston, cried a lot, wrote and read more than I thought humanly possible, and started learning how to combine my spiritual-speak with my school-speak.
I started dating Austin, got engaged to Austin, and married Austin.

This takes us to the present day, in which I am sitting in a tiny little apartment on Commonwealth Avenue where the tub is blue and you cannot open the fridge while standing in the kitchen. (I love this little apartment. It seeps sunshine.) I just sent my husband off to class and just paid for this blog, because I’m graduating again, and I want to keep writing.

I think I’ve forgotten how to write when it’s not for a professor, and I want to remember.
